Our workshops are here to unleash your creativity and refine your craft. Whether you're a songwriter, composer, or lyricist, our goal is to inspire and guide you on your musical journey.

Composition workshop overview

Songwriting/composition writing workshops will be run by Industry professionals engaged by NT Music School. Workshops will run all day following a regular school day timetable from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and will either be at NT Music School or a predetermined host school in Darwin and Alice Springs.


Content:

Songwriting / Composition Writing

  • Melody vs Lyrics – Hooks and Riffs.
  • Chord progressions and scales.
  • Song/composition.
  • Learn about shaping melodies and building harmony.
  • Arranging, expression, tempo, timbre, rhythm, and dynamics.
  • Participants 
  • Spaces are limited to 30 students at each workshop.

Recording workshop overview

Recording workshop sessions will be facilitated by an experienced sound engineer training students via current audio recording software. NT Music School will provide workshops at predetermined venues, setting a calendar of engagements once applicants complete expressions of interest. Places will be limited to 20 students per workshop. In-person workshops will be whole day engagements following school day timetable 8:30 am – 2:30 pm.

Recording and Producing a Demo

  • Choosing your gear (mics, digital interface units)
  • Setting up for recording
  • Basic tracking
  • Basic mixing
  • Bouncing tracks and mastering
  • Participants 


Spaces are limited to 20 students at each workshop.  Potential for a teacher-only professional development workshop, please contact NT Music School for more details.

  • Who can attend the workshops?

    Workshops are open to all Territory Government middle and senior school students. Please note workshops for upper primary school are only open to teachers.

  • What are the workshops about?

    There are two workshops available to participants: Songwriting and Composition, and Recording and Producing.

  • When will they be held?

    Workshops will be held mid term 2. Dates for specific workshops are listed in the workshop expression of interest page. Workshops will be provided subject to sufficient expressions of interest numbers. Please make sure to register your expressions of interest as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

  • What about if I only wanted to do the workshops?

    The workshops are open to all registered participants from NT Government schools intending to participate in the UnCovereD competition, including individual middle and high school entrants, or teachers from primary schools. Please note you must be able to make your own way to the events (Darwin or Alice Springs).

  • I live too far away to attend either the Darwin or Alice Springs workshops, have you got an alternative?

    Yes, NT Music Schools' UnCovereDworkshops will also be held online and recorded if you cannot make it to the live session.

  • What are the categories that I can enter in?

    There are three categories you can enter. Each category has a winner and runner-up prize. You must choose the correct category when uploading your application.

    The categories are:


    • Contemporary Melodic - music with lyrics and sung melodies. Anything from hard rock to country ballads, R&B, and everything in between.
    • Rap and Rhyme – music and beats with lyrics spoken, rapped, spat, chanted, can also contain some melodically sung passages.
    • Instrumental – beats, electronic dance music, acoustic and or electric instruments. Can include minimal lyrics and/or vocal effects, but predominantly instrumental.

  • How will my composition be judged?

    Judging criteria for each category can be found here (Link).

  • Who will be judging my work?

    NT Music School engages judges from various music industry backgrounds from outside of the school. Judges can be subject to change according to their personal availability.

  • When will the winners be announced?

    Winners will be announced on Thursday October 31.

Recording my song FAQ

  • Will I be judged on the quality of my song recording?

    No. You will not be judged on the quality of your composition recording. However, you will be judged on the quality of the musical delivery of your composition.

  • Can I record my song on my phone?

    Yes, you can record your song on any device, provided you are able to upload the audio file to our website in an acceptable format, such as .mp3.

  • Is there a limit to how many people can perform on the recording?

    No. You can record yourself as a soloist, a class, or anything in between.

  • What if I am having problems recording/uploading or other?

    Please see if your music teacher can help you in the first instance, but if you are still having trouble, reach out to the NT Music School via our email ntms.uncovered@education.nt.gov.au or phone 89635550.
